Time for another job change. My last day at XDS is tomorrow, 6/15/07. I am going to do what I've been trying to get back to for about 6 years. Programming in a non-scripted language. I've been coding away on perl for the last few years.
After the bubble burst, I had not written any code for almost 18 months. Even though I was doing system administration for over 20 years, it was never a title. So I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. I could not get a sysadmin job b ecause ti looked like I only had a couple years of experience. I could not get a programming job because I had not written code in 18 months.
When the CM job at Zone Labs came up I took it. It was fun. I learned a lot. But some never considered me a real engineer because I scripted.
Well, as of the 29th of this month, I am a C++ programmer again. I am doing a lot of ready to catch up on everything I've forgotten. It is scary to have forgotten information that some base an entire career out of it.
Now I get a 2 week break before I start. Thanks to John, I get a place to stay in Monterey for a week. This Friday, 6/15, is a member night at the aquarium. Dinner overlooking Monterey bay. And I get to wander around without dealing with the normal crowds. It should be nice.
I'll get to drive down and see Big Sur for the first time. I can't wait.
I'll try to remember to post some pictures.
